Overview of Research Activities from the 2005 Research Report The Department of Electrical Engineering has 19 full time academic staff, 124 MSc. students and 27 PhD students in 2005. The research activities and projects are largely industrially based. The main funding sources are Eskom, Telkom, Siemens, De Beers, Mintek, Water Research Commission, Anglo Platinum, Department of Trade and Industry, South African National Defence Force, SunSpace, IQS and the NRF.
The Department has seen a growth in number of undergraduate students over the past 9 years, which is expected to result in higher postgraduate numbers. There are six large research groups in the Department, which attract 80% of the postgraduate students. These are:
Control and Instrumentation Research areas include control of industrial plants and unit processes, dynamic modelling of electrical units, microcomputer implementation of iterative feedback controllers, theory of large scale control engineering structures, abnormal situation management using wavelets.

Power Engineering Research areas include power electronics; machines and drives; power delivery systems including power system stability, voltage stability and control, distributed generation, technologies for low cost networks, electrification technology and policy, load modelling, reliability, and
geomagnetically induced currents.

Speech Technology Research Group Research focuses on the human language technology which is a combination of speech research and human languages. Main areas of interest are text to speech and speaker recognition with applications to the issues of digital divide and indigenous South African languages.
